The Building Department promotes public health, safety and welfare through the use and occupancy of buildings and administration of building regulations.

The city requires that any structure sold or rented must comply with BOCA National Property Maintenance Code using local modifications. A fee of $50 is required for this inspection, due at the time of application. A certificate of compliance is issued when the dwelling passes inspection, which is good for six months or until a change of occupancy occurs.

The city performs a comprehensive property maintenance inspection inspecting exterior property and premises, plumbing, mechanical and electrical systems and equipment, fire and life safety aspects, fundamental light, ventilation and occupant needs and general sanitation.
